Pumpkin Patch Brownies Recipe

Cultural Background and Origin:

Pumpkin as an ingredient has its roots in the Americas, where it was cultivated by Indigenous peoples long before European settlers arrived. The tradition of using pumpkin in desserts became popular in the United States, especially during the fall harvest and the celebration of Thanksgiving. Brownies, on the other hand, originated in the United States around the late 19th century and have become a well-loved dessert all over the world. The combination of pumpkin and chocolate in Pumpkin Patch Brownies reflects the fusion of these two beloved culinary traditions, marrying the flavors of autumn with a classic chocolate treat.

Ingredients

For the Pumpkin Layer:

· 1 cup canned pure pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)

· 1/2 cup granulated sugar

· 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed

· 1/3 cup vegetable oil or melted coconut oil

· 2 large eggs

· 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

· 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

· 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

· 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

· 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

· 1/2 teaspoon salt

· 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

· 1 cup all-purpose flour

For the Brownie Layer:

· 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

· 1 cup granulated sugar

· 2 large eggs

· 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

· 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

· 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

· 1/4 teaspoon salt

· 1/4 teaspoon baking powder

· 1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

Make the Pumpkin Layer:

In a medium bowl, combine the canned pumpkin, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.

Add the cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, salt, baking powder, and flour. Stir until well combined. Set aside.

       Prepare the Brownie Layer:

In a large bowl, combine the melted butter and sugar. Mix well.

Add the eggs and vanilla extract, stirring until smooth.

Sift in the cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder. Mix until no dry ingredients remain. Fold in the chocolate chips, if using.

Layer the Brownies:

Spread the brownie batter evenly in the prepared baking pan.

Carefully dollop the pumpkin mixture on top of the brownie layer. Using a knife or toothpick, swirl the two batters together gently to create a marbled effect.

   Bake:

Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter).

Allow to cool in the pan before slicing into squares.

Serve:

Enjoy as is, or dust with powdered sugar for an elegant presentation.

Bonus Tips

· Storage: Store brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate them for up to a week. They can also be frozen for up to 3 months.

· Variations: You can add chopped nuts, such as walnuts or pecans, for added crunch, or dried fruit like cranberries for a tangy touch.

· Healthier Option: Consider substituting half the oil with unsweetened applesauce for a lower-fat version without compromising moisture.
