Recipe: Meatballs with Spaghetti

Ingredients:

For the meatballs:

· 1 lb ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)

· 1/4 cup breadcrumbs

· 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

· 1 egg

· 2 garlic cloves (minced)

· 1/4 cup finely chopped parsley

· 1/2 tsp salt

· 1/4 tsp black pepper

· 1/4 tsp dried oregano

    For the sauce:

· 2 tbsp olive oil

· 1 medium onion (finely chopped)

· 3 garlic cloves (minced)

· 28 oz can of crushed tomatoes

· 1 tsp dried basil

· 1/2 tsp sugar

· Salt and pepper to taste

   For the spaghetti:

· 12 oz spaghetti

· Grated Parmesan and fresh basil for garnish

      Instructions:

Prepare the Meatballs:

In a bowl, mix ground meat, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, egg, garlic, parsley, salt, pepper, and oregano until combined.

Form into 12-14 evenly sized meatballs.

Cook the Meatballs:

Heat a large skillet with olive oil over medium heat.

Brown the meatballs on all sides, then remove and set aside.

Make the Sauce:

In the same skillet, sauté onions and garlic until fragrant.

Add crushed tomatoes, basil, sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15-20 minutes.

Combine:

Add the browned meatballs to the sauce and cook for 10 minutes.

Cook Spaghetti:

Boil spaghetti as per package instructions. Drain.

Serve:

Toss spaghetti with the sauce or plate it separately with meatballs on top. Garnish with Parmesan and fresh basil.

Cultural Background and Origin:

Spaghetti and meatballs is often associated with Italian cuisine but was actually popularized by Italian immigrants in America during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Italians traditionally didn’t serve pasta and meatballs together in Italy. The dish reflects Italian-American ingenuity, blending Italian flavors with American abundance and taste preferences.

Bonus Tips:

· Use a mix of ground beef, pork, and veal for more tender meatballs.

· Adding a splash of milk to the meatball mixture helps keep them moist.

· Freeze uncooked meatballs for quick meals later.
